The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) is the governmental body that regulates online gaming and digital entertainment in Malta. The MGA was established in 2002 as a result of an agreement between the governments of Malta and the UK, with the purpose of regulating online gambling. As part of its regulatory obligations, the MGA is responsible for issuing licenses to operators of casino facilities, verifying operator compliance with applicable regulations, investigating allegations of malpractice or crime associated with gambling activities, and resolving disputes arising from gaming activity.
The MGA also oversees marketing materials that are used by operators to promote their services to consumers within Maltese jurisdiction; monitors customer feedback; provides support in relation to problem gambling; coordinates educational programmes relating to responsible gaming behaviour; and conducts research into new trends related to digital entertainment and online leisure behaviors.
In addition, the MGA maintains a wide-reaching Anti-Money Laundering programme that targets both criminal elements engaged in illicit finance activities as well as unlawful websites or players who Sponsor Malicious Gamblers (SMGs).
